Strengthening Safety Around Large Lathes at Nucor
Project Overview:
Safety and access control were critical priorities for Nucor as they sought to protect employees better while working around large lathes and heavy machinery. To support these efforts, CMM Industrial partnered with WireCrafters to design and implement a wire partition system that serves as both a physical barrier and a machine-guarding solution. The project focused on creating a secure, clearly defined area around high-risk equipment while maintaining visibility and workflow efficiency throughout the facility.
Customer Description
Nucor was operating a large industrial lathe that, due to its significant size and mass, carried a high level of inertia and required an extended rundown time after being powered down. This created a critical safety concern, as the equipment could remain in motion even after operations had stopped. To address this risk, Nucor emphasized the importance of keeping all personnel securely locked out of the designated area while the machines were running or slowing to a complete stop. Maintaining strict control over access during this period was essential to ensuring safety protocols were followed and reducing the potential for accidental exposure to moving equipment.
