What are the OSHA requirements for machine guarding?

The OSHA requirements for machine guarding are outlined in 29 CFR 1910.212 and include:

  • Prevent Contact – Guards must prevent hands, arms, and any body part from contacting hazardous moving parts.
  • Secure Guards – Guards must be firmly attached and not easily removable.
  • Protect from Falling Objects – Guards must prevent objects from falling into moving machinery.
  • No Interference – Guards must not interfere with machine operation or productivity.
  • Durable Construction – Guards must be strong enough to withstand workplace conditions.
  • Safe Design – Guards must eliminate sharp edges or pinch points that could cause additional hazards.
  • Visibility – Where necessary, guards should allow workers to see the machine operation safely.

These requirements ensure machines are equipped to protect workers, comply with safety standards, and reduce workplace injuries.
